Why the Phase Out?

R-22 is a refrigerant common in some older air conditioning models. The EPA has determined that R-22 is harmful to the environment, especially to the ozone layer. More modern units contain R-410A, a refrigerant that does not deplete the ozone layer if it leaks out of the system.

Does Your AC Contain R-22 Refrigerant?

Most AC units have a nameplate that indicates the refrigerant it contains. The nameplate is typically located on the outdoor condenser. R-22 also goes by the name HCFC-22.

Even if your AC doesn’t have a nameplate, if your system was installed on or before 2004, then it probably contains R-22.

My AC Contains R-22; Now What?

There is no need to worry that the EPA is going to kick down your door. As long as you keep your existing HVAC unit in good condition, then you can continue to use your unit. Manufacturers will no longer use R-22 when assembling new AC units. However, that doesn’t mean your system with R-22 is now illegal to own and use.
